Eastern Michigan University hockey is now accepting resumes for the Head Coaching position.  Interested coaches are encouraged to send a resume with their past records to:  generalmanager@emuhockey.org

Deadline for submitting resumes is March 23, 2008.

Koester Chosen For CSCHL Sportsmanship Award

February 19, 2007

Eastern Michigan University Captain, Kelly Koester, has been awarded the 2006-2007 CSCHL Sportsmanship Award.  The award is an equivalent to the NHL's Lady Bing Trophy.  It is voted on by the ten coaches in the league.

Behind the scenes, Koester is a true leader.  He is a quiet individual with a wealth of knowledge about the game.  When the team needs a "pick me up" goal, he is always one of the players to watch in the game.  Every time he has the puck, you expect something good to happen.  You could never count the instances when the coaches looked to him for his leadership and skill.   This season Kelly scored 22 goals, had 14 assists for 36 points.  His penalty time was only ten minutes.

Unfortunately Koester is a senior this year and his playing days at EMU are over.  The team, coaches and staff congratulate Kelly on this great accomplishment!  Hopefully, he will decide to continue being involved in the EMU hockey program in the years to come.

2007-2008 Tentative Schedule Posted

February 19, 200

The season is just over but the staff and coaches are already preparing for next season.  To start, the 2007-2008 Eagles tentative schedule has been posted on the website.

There are still loose ends to tie up, but the majority of the schedule itself is finished.  Next season looks to bring an exciting line up of home and away games.  Fans will get to see top ranked CSCHL rivals and some teams that haven't made the trip to Ann Arbor recently.  Teams the Eagles haven't played in recent years, but are scheduled to meet are:  Slippery Rock University, Washington & Jefferson and Central Michigan University.  The Eagles will also meet Grand Valley State and new entry to the D1 ACHA, Adrian College.  Both those series will be home and home.  Eastern will also meet the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor's division 2 team.

Check back often for updates to the tentative schedule.

Fan Appreciation Night A Huge Success

February 12, 2007

EMU hockey celebrated their legion of fans on Saturday Night with Fan Appreciation Night.  They also honored their seven seniors in a ceremony with the players and parents.

Eastern's senior players are (pictured L-R):  Brian Markowicz, Bobby Mayes, Kelly Koester, Craig Drdek, Dan Olgren, Steve Jacobs and Tom Burke. It is one of the larger group of seniors in recent years.  Four of them, Mayes, Koester, Olgren and Drdek, played for Eastern since their freshman year.  Good Luck to the seniors in the future.  You will be missed by your team mates and staff.

The team also celebrated their fans with appreciation night.  The grand prizes were given away from the intermission games.  Evan Griffiths won the Texas Roadhouse Score O grand prize; two tickets to a Detroit Red Wing game in the WDIV-TV suite and dinner for two at Texas Roadhouse.  The Great Wolf Lodge Chuck A Puck grand prize, a two night stay at Great Wolf Lodge in Sandusky, Ohio, was won by Rob Olgren.  Congrats to both of our winners!

Fans were treated with free gifts.  Every fan received a 2006-2007 Media Guide and there were prizes tossed between periods.  Gifts such as T-Shirts, Pucks and EMU water bottles were given to the fans.  Thanks to all the fans for supporting the team and we look forward to an even better 2007-2008 season.

Friends of EMU Hockey Organization To Sponsor Recruitment/Evaluation Skate

March 23, 2007

The newly formed booster organization, The Friends of EMU Hockey, will conduct a Recruitment/Evaluation Skate next month at the Farmington Hills Ice Arena.

The skates will take place on April 10-12 and April 17-19 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. each night.  The cost is $150 per week.  According to Head Coach, Lee Norwood, these skates will allow prospective players to be evaluated by the coaching staff.  Individuals may skate at either of the sessions for the fee.  Anyone wishing to skate in both, would pay for two sessions.  The sessions are a great opportunity for new students to showcase their talents for the coaches.

Interested individuals should contact assistant coach, Steve Hill, to arrange payment and registration or for more information.  He can be emailed at:  coachshill@comcast.net  or phoned at: 734-812-8981.

Talk Show Host To Speak At Banquet

March 12, 2007

He is the former co-host of "The Big Show" with Doug Karsch, which aired weekdays on WXYT radio and he will be the guest speaker at this years awards banquet.  His name is Art Regner.

Regner is a common name among hockey fans in the Michigan area.  He is one of the most knowledgeable sports personalities on the game.  Famous for his Red Wing 'rants", he would tell it like it is on his Red Wing post game shows.  Regner would also be one of the first reporters with all the Red Wings information including reliable trade rumors.

He began his radio career as a producer on the Denny McClain show in the late '80's on then Detroit talk radio, WXYT.  He also covered the Michigan Wolverines Hockey team on local television.  Eventually he found his way into sports talk radio with WDFN, the first all sports talk station in Detroit.  WXYT then hired him and paired him with Doug Karsch to create "The Big Show", one of the higher rated shows on the station.  Currently Regner is sitting in on the sports wrap show on WJBK, Fox 2 in Detroit.  "I'm thrilled to welcome Art as our speaker," General Manager Robert Stumpmier said.   'He will bring a wealth of interesting stories and tell a side of the game which most players have never seen," Stumpmier continued.

Players and staff look forward to welcoming Art and hopefully spreading some Eagles spirit to him.

Koester & Porter Headed to All Star Game

February 19, 2007

Eagles Senior Captain Kelly Koester (right in pictures) and Sophomore Derek Porter are headed to the 2007 CSCHL All Star Game.  The game will take place this Saturday at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.  Both players were chosen as the EMU representatives from the CSCHL coaches votes.

In 33 regular season games, Koester netted 22 goals and 14 assists for 36 points.  He scored nine power play goals, second (by one goal) behind Dan Olgren, and two short handed goals.  He was instrumental as the teams captain, always leading by example.  When the team needed a boost on the ice, Koester could always be counted upon.  His leadership and sportsmanship led to the Sportsmanship award from the CSCHL this season.

Porter led the team in points with 44; 22 goals and 22 assists.  He also led with 5 game winning goals.  He was strong on special teams with eight power play goals and two short handed.  Porter was also one of four players to play all 35 regular season games.

Congratulations to both players!  The Eagles know you will represent our team well.

Illinois Hands EMU An Early Exit

February 17, 2007

Top ranked University of Illinois handed the Eagles an early playoff exit on Friday, beating EMU with a 1-10 final.

Eastern knew going in that it wasn't an easy task, but still they welcomed the challenge and found that Illinois was just too good.  The Illini dominated all aspects of the game and the Eagles were never really in it.  Chad Cassels' team was more than playoff ready and probably looked at the CSCHL playoffs has a warm up of things to come, speaking of the ACHA National Championship.  His team was like a well oiled machine and working on all cylinders.

Saturdays game against U of M Dearborn was disappointment for the Eagles also.  The Wolves scored five times in the first five minutes of the game, to make it look out of reach for EMU.  Eastern did battle back in the second period to tie the score, but UMD continued their offensive attack and netted five more goals to end the game with a 6-10 score.

Now the tweaking begins for next season.  This season should be viewed as a success for the Eagles, even though their record may not show it.  There is a new coaching staff that is dedicated to the Eastern program and a good foundation for a winning team.  With the addition of some key players, the pieces of the puzzle should begin to fall in place.  The unfortunate aspect is we have to wait until September to see that begin to happen.

Eagles To Meet Illinois In CSCHL Playoffs

February 12, 2007

It was a couple hard fought games this weekend against Western Michigan University, but the Eagles came out on top to clinch the seventh seed in the CSCHL playoffs.  The playoffs begin this Friday at Bird Arena in Athens, Ohio.  EMU's first match up will be against the #1, nationally ranked, Illinois Illini.

Friday's contest against WMU in Kalamazoo didn't turn out the way the Eagles had hoped.  It was a physical game filled with penalties.  The game was tied 2-2 after one period, and a back and forth second period.  At the 14:00 mark of the second, WMU took the lead and would not give it back to Eastern.  EMU was sent home with a 5-7 loss, and the Eagles would have to wait another day to clinch the playoff spot.

Saturday back at the Ice Cube, the players were convinced that this would not be their last game of the season.  Eastern took a 4-0 lead in the first before the Stallions netted two goals to end the first period 4-2.  There was no scoring in the second; in the third, Derek Porter scored twice to get a hat trick.  The Eagles could finally breath a sigh of relief and look forward to the playoffs.

The team's first game will be at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.  If the Eagles win on Friday they will be guaranteed to play on Sunday.  Watch the web site for updated scores and game times this weekend.  Go Eagles!!

Two To Go

February 6, 2007

It seems it was just the beginning of the season and here we are a few days from the final regular season games and our Eagles are a point away from the CSCHL playoffs.

This past weekend did not play out in the manner the Eagles had wished, they could only manage a series split with local rival University of Michigan Dearborn.  That split allowed UMD to secure a playoff spot and leave the last spot for either EMU or Western Michigan who will meet this weekend in the season ending series.

Eastern only needs to reach a shootout in one game to secure a playoff spot, but knowing the current roster of players, the team will only be satisfied with a sweep.  Anything less will not meet the teams expectations.  The team has played solid the last few weeks, but sometimes the bounces just don't go your way, as was the case on Saturday night in Dearborn.  The Eagles are hoping to continue and improve in order to be ready for a possible first round match with Ohio University on OU's home ice.  It is a daunting task for EMU, but Coach Norwood is sure they are up for it and will be ready when that time comes.

First the Eagles need to face off against Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo on Friday, then return to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube on Saturday for a rematch.  Saturday's game will also be "Fan Appreciation Night" and everyone in attendance will receive a free gift from the team while supplies last.  Go Eagles!!

Overtime Thriller Pays Off In Split

January 28, 2007

After a disappointing loss against local rival, the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies, on Friday night, the Eagles played a tight game on Saturday which resulted in a overtime win to split the weekend home and home series.

Friday's game at the Onyx Ice Arena in Rochester seemed to be a fairly even match up. The problem for EMU was that Oakland was able to take advantage of any small mistake they made.  The Eagles outshot OU, 32 to 26 and both teams were 2 for 8 on the power play.  The main difference was turn-overs in the EMU zone.  The final score was in favor of the Golden Grizzlies,  5-2, with the last goal an empty netter.

The home and home series switched back to the Ice Cube on Saturday and Eastern played a tough defensive game.  Neither team gave up a power play goal.  Eastern had three power play opportunities and Oakland 4.  Shots were fairly even the entire game also, so it was no surprise the game would go to overtime.  In overtime EMU points leader, Derek Porter, would score his fifth game winner at the 3:39 mark of the OT for a 3-2 final.

Eastern faces off this weekend against University of Michigan Dearborn in a series that could lock up a playoff position.  It is considered to be the biggest series this year for the Eagles.  Friday's game time is 7:45 p.m. at the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor and Saturday's is 7:30 p.m. in Dearborn.

A St. Louis Sweep

January 20, 2007

Amid the weekends unpredictable weather, the Eagles traveled to St. Louis and were rewarded with a sweep and eight more points toward a playoff berth in the CSCHL playoffs.

Friday's game against the Billikens looked more like a hockey clinic than a game.  St. Louis' undisciplined play helped the Eagles get out to an early lead and end the first period with a 4-2 score.  In the second, EMU held the Billikens scoreless and added 3 more goals for a 7-2 score.  By the third period, St. Louis was well out of the game and the Eagles added four more goals for an ending score of 11-4.  Derek Porter led Eastern with a six point night which included four goals.  Also scoring goals for EMU were, Thomson, Connolly, Drdek, Hattie, Olgren, Kerch and Burke.

The contest on Saturday saw a renewed effort by St. Louis and a somewhat lackadaisical attitude by the Eagles in the first two periods. Both the first and second periods ended in ties but the Eagles stepped up their game in the third and added two more goals by Olgren and Hopper to help finish off the Billikens in a 6-4 win.  Dan Olgren and Derek Porter led the team, both having three point nights.

The Eagles now play three weekends of home and home series against Oakland, U of M Dearborn and Western Michigan.  EMU hopes to improve and build on this weekend in order to secure a playoff spot for the CSCHL playoffs held February 16-18 in Athens, Ohio.

Mid Season Report Looks Promising

December 16, 2006

With the first semester behind them, the EMU Eagles are looking forward to being a playoff contender after a rocky start.

After the first eight games of the year, the Eagles held a 5-3 record, with two of those losses to top ranked Ohio.  From that point the Eagles began to struggle.  In their next 12 games they were 2-10 for an overall record of 7-13.  The team was looking for answers wherever they could find them.  Some of the answers came in the form of having a young team and a new coaching staff.  Looking back on those games now, it could have been a major period of adjustment for the Eagles.  That adjustment time may be behind them after winning their last three games of the semester against formidable opponents like Lindenwood and Univeristy of Michigan Dearborn.  The Eagles seemed to be the dominant team in those games and the defensive game has finally turned the corner.  Adding to that, their special teams has got the job done, especially when it matters most.

The team is also looking forward to adding three players to their roster in the second semester.  U of M Dearborn defenseman, Brian Hopper, has decided to leave that school and join the EMU roster.  In 22 games at UMD, Hopper posted an average of a point per game with one goal and 21 assists.  Coach Norwood believes he will solidify the improving defense and create a lot of difficulties for the opposition.  The other two players come from the Trenton High School program.  Defenseman John Laub and Forward Brian Thomson were two top players for Trenton in their senior year.  The Eagles welcome the three to their roster and wish them an outstanding run at EMU!

Players are looking forward to a short break before facing off against two tuff opponents to begin the new year.  The red hot Kent State Golden Flashes visit the Ice Cube on January 5th & 6th; then the Eagles hit the road for two weekends.  Their first stop is Ohio University, where they hope to get revenge for two losses in October, then on to St. Louis the following weekend for their only meeting with the Bilikens.  The team is already looking forward to proving that the problems in the first semester were just growing pains and come playoff time, the Eagles will be in the running for a championship.  Go Eagles!!

Koester Hat Trick Leads To Lindenwood Split

December 4, 2006

After a Friday night, 6-1 loss, which left the EMU Eagles puzzled, Captain Kelly Koester led the team to a 5-4 win, over top ranked Lindenwood University, on Saturday.

Friday's contest may have been one of the better outings for the team this year.  Even though the final score ended with a 6-1 loss, the Eagles looked like the dominant team.  They out shot the Lions, 47-34, and only allowed three power play opportunities, which the Lions could not convert.  Lindenwood gave EMU 10 power play chances, but they could only score once, which was the only goal of the game for Eastern.  The Lion's goaltending was the difference on this night in addition to a few lucky bounces in the Eagles end.

After the Eagles were left wondering exactly where to get the offense to win, they were led by Kelly Koester who would score a hat trick in Saturday's game.  The first and second periods belonged to the Eagles; their defense and goaltending got the job done.  Lindenwood wasn't ready to give up though.  After two periods trailing 4-1, they came out in the third, allowed Eastern to score for a 5-1 lead, but then scored 3 goals in five minutes to get back into the game.  The Lions pulled their goalie with 1:30 left, but were unable to score in a nail biting finish.

The Eagles hope to take the momentum into the upcoming series with University of Michigan, Dearborn.  The home and home series starts Friday at UM-D and ends Saturday at the Ice Cube.  Eastern then begins it Christmas break and returns to action on January 5 when they host Kent State in Ann Arbor.

Success!

November 13, 2006

It was a journey into unchartered waters for the EMU Eagles, but in the end one word would describe it, Success!

Sunday was a day enjoyed by not only the Eagles, but also by the Detroit Red Wings Alumni.  The day started with the announcement of both rosters, then alumni Kraig Nienhuis sang the national anthem.  Next was the ceremonial puck drop by EMU Club Sports Director, Lou Gianino, then it was "game on."  You could see the feel good atmosphere of the game on both sides.  Once in a while the alumni would bring the EMU players off their cloud and give them a nice friendly check into the boards.  Of course, what would a hockey game be without a little "scrum".  Freshman Sean Preston got a feel for a little rough housing courtesy of Sean Burr. (I think it might of been Sean's pink tape that started it all.)

On the scoring side, it was no surprise.  The Red Wings alumni won the game 5-4.  Eagles scoring goals were:  Matt Opyd, Kelly Koester, Lucas Hartman and Jeff Snook.  Alumni goals were led by Dan Newman, who scored a hat trick, Craig Wolanin and Shawn Burr.  All three EMU goalies played in the game, with Markowicz playing on the alumni side in the third period.  (By the way Brian, thanks for letting your Eagles win the game.)

All around the day was great!  There was a reception following the game, at Ginopolis restaurant, with about 210 players, families and fans in attendance.  The Eagles hope to make this an annual event.  Players and staff extend their special thanks to Coach Lee Norwood, who made it all happen, and to all the Detroit Red Wings Alumni.  There will be many special memories for everyone to reminisce.

Red Wing Alumni Game Sunday

November 10, 2006

The Eastern Michigan University Eagles largest fundraiser of the year will take place Sunday at the Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, when your Eagles will play against some of the best players to ever skate in the NHL.

Confirmed players as of this update are:  Mickey Redmond, Joe Kocur, Dennis Hextall, Paul Yserbaert, Tony McKegney, Doug Brown, Shawn Burr, John Ogrodnick, Dino Ciccarelli, Paul MacKinnon, Pat Ribble, Pat Peake, Brent Fedyk, Craig Wolanin, Dan Newman, Tom Williams, Nick Libett, Bill Evo, Chris Tamer, Eddie Mio, Dave Roberts and EMU’s own, Lee Norwood.

Eagle players are looking forward to the opportunity, knowing that it is a tremendous privilege to skate with such talented players.  For some, it is a dream to play with hockey greats that have worn the winged wheel of the Detroit Red Wings.  All of the Eagle players grew up watching the alumni play in the NHL, but most never imagined they would take the same ice one day.

Former Eagle players still have a chance to play with the Red Wings alumni. Interested players should contact any current player or staff for information.

Eagles Drop Pair in Illinois

November 5, 2006

The bleeding continues for the Eagles as they dropped a pair against #1 ranked Illinois this weekend.

Friday nights contest turned out to be no contest.  Illinois showed why they are ranked the #1 team in the nation by shutting out EMU in a final score of 8-0.  Illinois' power play was lethal, scoring 4 for 8, while Eastern's wasn't even a whimper, scoring zero on seven tries.  Saturday's game showed a little promise has the Eagles actually got a few scoring chances but still lost 7-3.  EMU's penalty killing was better than Friday, allowing only 2 on 9 tries and they scored one power play goal on 6 tries.  Brad Kerch also scored his first ACHA goal in the second period and Ryan Connolly scored his first back from a short lay off.

The Eagles schedule doesn't get any easier as they face off against Western Michigan next weekend in a home and home series.  The first game is away at Kalamazoo before returning home Saturday in a 7:45 p.m. contest.

Perfect On Home Ice

October 23, 2006

The Eagles extended their undefeated record on home ice this past weekend, by defeating the University of Buffalo Bulls, 4-2.

Eastern and Buffalo played fairly even in the first period.  Dan Olgren opened the scoring at the :56 second mark, but the Bulls answered that later in the period with two goals.  Kelly Koester then added a goal at 15:51 to tie the score, which is how the period ended.  Neither team stood out in the period, but that would change in the second.  Eastern shut down Buffalo's offense and only allowed two shots.  Olgren scored his second of the game, which turned out to be the game winner, and Steve Kardel added one also.  It may have been one of EMU's better defensive periods this year.  The Eagles continued to play a good defensive game in the third and neither team allowed a goal.

Eastern continues their home stand with two against CSCHL opponent, Robert Morris (IL), this coming weekend.  Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Ohio Too Much, Too Early ...but

October 15, 2006

The Eagles traveled to Athens this past weekend in hopes of discovering what they are made of.  The trip proved successful from that point of view, but they also discovered they have some work to do.

Friday's game found the Eagles leading, 2-0, after the first period.  It is possible that the Bobcats thought they would be meeting the Eagles of old.  It didn't take them long to figure out they were wrong.  EMU may have given Ohio their first test of the year.  By the third period the score was tied, even though much of that period found Eastern on the penalty kill.  With less than 2:00 left in the third, Ohio scored and walked away with the 4-3 win.  Derek Porter scored both short handed and on the power play in the first period.  Stand out freshman Jeff Snook, once again had a very good game and scored on a breakaway.  A plus for the Eagles was that they know they can hang with the best teams and give themselves a chance to win.  Unfortunately on this night it wasn't meant to be.

Eastern was never a real threat on Saturday.  Their defense, penalty killing and power play were all less than desirable.  That allowed Ohio to get the "W" with a 9-4 score.  It could be the rigors of the road and playing against the best team in the league that wore them down this early in the season.  Some of the best players on the team were MIA, so to speak, and while others tried to step in, it just wasn't enough.  Defense seems to be the looming issue.  The defensive units are making little mistakes that the opponent take advantage of.  With a former NHL defenseman leading this team, it would be no surprise to see that change very soon.  Once that is resolved, Ohio should see an even stronger team come January for the re-match.

Eastern now returns home for the next two weekends.  Next Saturday they will meet University of Buffalo, a game in which Buffalo will be wanting revenge for the overtime loss a few weeks ago.  The following weekend Robert Morris (IL) will come to town for a pair.

First Road Trip Offers A Split

October 8, 2006

The Eagles found out this past weekend that the road can sometimes be a cruel place.  Their first road trip of the season began with a 6-4 loss to Niagara on Friday and a 4-3 overtime win on Saturday in Buffalo.  Both games proved equally difficult for EMU.

The Eagles went into Niagara on Friday, possibly underestimating the talent of the Purple Eagles.  Niagara seemed to be a different team than a week earlier when they met at the Ice Cube.  Niagara came ready to play and the same could not be said for Eastern.  The Eagles opened the scoring when freshman Jeff Snook scored his second of the season with an assist by Josh Nummerdor.  The first ten minutes of the game looked to be all Eagles but after that point, Niagara took control and would not give it up until the last five minutes of the game.  At that point Eastern scored three goals but it was too little, too late and the Purple Eagles would take the win.  EMU was zero for nine on the power play and Niagara was two for nine.  Uncharacteristic of EMU was their lack of special teams presence.  Kelly Koester continued his point streak and scored a third period goal.

Saturday's game against Buffalo looked to be another long night for the Eagles.  The team went into the game demanding a win of themselves and in the end they would meet that demand, but not before a tough night.  Buffalo opened the game with a goal that was squeezed between Kalenieki's pad and the post by a wrap around.  The first period ended with a 1-0 lead for Buffalo.  In the second period, EMU tried to struggle back but just couldn't find their legs.  Defense was poor and skating was lacking.  Olgen did open the scoring for EMU but the team trailed 2-1 at the end of the second.  The third period looked bleak for the Eagles.  They came out of the intermission but couldn't seem to get anything going their way.  PJ Pinkerton scored unassisted at the 14:38 point to bring the game to a 3-2 score.  The Eagles then began to show their "no lose" mentality.  With 47 seconds left in the period, the Eagles pulled their goalie and with three seconds left Dan Olgren put one in to tie the game and send it to overtime.  In overtime it was all Eagles and team Captain Kelly Koester proved why he is "The Captain" and scored the game winner with 1:01 left.

In the grand scheme of things the road trip should be looked upon as successful.  Even with the less than expected outings, the team learned a lot about themselves and each other.  They proved they can over come controversy and when the team sets their mind to a task, they can do it.  This team may prove to have more character than many of the recent rosters.  As a side note, the team made a quick stop at Niagara Falls to view one of natures many wonders.  For many team members, it was their first view of the falls and it proved to be a excellent bonding experience.

The Eagles now will be tested this coming weekend when they travel to Athens, Ohio and take on the Ohio University Bobcats.  This will truly be the first real test of this team.  If their will ever be a time to over come adversity, it will be in Ohio.

Home Record Stays Intact

October 1, 2006

The Eagles finished out their first home stand, keeping a perfect 3-0 record, by defeating Niagara and Grand Valley State this past weekend.

Friday's game was helped by the outstanding goaltending of Joe Rutherford.  He held the Purple Eagles to just one goal on 24 shots.  The Eagle's penalty kill also helped by killing nine of the 10 Niagara power plays.  Dan Olgren continued his point streak by adding a power play goal in the third period. That goal also proved to be the game winner for Eastern with a 4-1 score.

Saturday's game against the Grand Valley State Lakers was ridden with 23 penalties between the two teams.  The Eagles found themselves short, two men, for much of a five minute span in the second period.  That opened the door for the Lakers to score and get back into the game.  The resiliency of the team allowed them to still get the win, with EMU plus/minus leader Derek Porter scoring his second goal and game winner with 2:56 left in the second period.  Grand Valley State was not a serious threat in the third and the team exchanged goals for a final score of 7-5.  Matt Opyd continued his three game point streak by scoring two goals also.

The Eagles now take the road for the next two weekends.  First stop is the Buffalo/ Niagara, New York area.  they will face off against Niagara at 9:15 p.m. on Friday and against Buffalo, on Saturday at 8:25 p.m.  Then they will travel to Athens to compete against league leading Ohio University.

Eagles Down Spartans In Opener

September 23, 2006

Expectations are high for the EMU Eagles this season, and if Friday's game is any indication, the team seems to be on the right track.

The game didn't begin like the Eagles would have liked, but once they tied the game, it was all EMU.  The first period was a grim start for the team.  They allowed three goals and were shut out by the Spartans.  The Eagles were determined to start the season right and in the second, they scored three goals within three minutes to tie it up.  From that point forward, it was all EMU who eventually took a 5-3 lead until one second left in the game when the Spartans snuck one in.

There were many bright spots in the game.  Dan Olgren was the first star with two goals and an assist.  Goaltending was split between Brian Markowicz and Jeremy Kaleniecki.  Kaleniecki faced 15 shots and almost held the Spartans scoreless against him.  Special teams also looked fantastic, scoring once on the power play and the penalty killers shut down any chance the Spartans had on their power play.

If Friday's game is any indication, this Eagles season could be one of the most memorable in recent years.  They take the home ice again this Friday, when they face off at 7:45 p.m. against Niagara University at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Team Welcomes Cheli's Chili as Chuck a Puck Sponsor

September 14, 2006

The Eagles have added another proud sponsor to their list of supporters.  Cheli's Chili will provide a $25 gift certificate prize for the Chuck A Puck event held in the second intermission of every home game.

Cheli's Chili is owned by Detroit Red Wing and future NHL Hall of Fame player, Chris Chelios.  The restaurant has two locations, Dearborn, Michigan and downtown Detroit, adjacent to Comerica Park.  The downtown restaurant/bar is the primary sponsor for the event.  General Manager, Robert Stumpmier said the team is thrilled to include Cheli's Chili Bar to the list of growing supporters to EMU hockey.  "It is a fine establishment with quality pricing and fantastic food."  Stumpmier stated.  "The restaurant and team will complement each other and hopefully this is the beginning of a long business relationship," he continued.

New Players Welcomed To the Line Up

August 27, 2006

As the hockey season draws near, the Eagles met for their first official team event, try outs for the upcoming year. The event took place on Saturday and Sunday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

The players took the ice under the direction of a new coaching staff and participated in drills and scrimages that helped Coach Norwood choose 29 players.  Those players now have the opportunity to prove that they are capable of a continuing roster spot on the team.  Seventeen players are returning and 12 are new faces to the Eagles.

The new roster can be viewed at:  http://www.emuhockey.org/roster_20062007.htm

Congratulations and good luck to the EMU Eagles Hockey Team!

Red Wing Alumni Accepts Coach Position

August 12, 2006

The Eastern Michigan University Eagles are proud to announce their new coach.  Former Red Wing alumni and NHL defenseman, Lee Norwood, will take over the duties effective immediately.

Norwood, a Trenton, Michigan native, played 17 seasons of professional hockey.  He was drafted in the third round, 67th overall, in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft by the Quebec Nordiques.  During his 17 pro seasons, he played 12 in the NHL.  Five of those were with the Detroit Red Wings.  In the '84-'85 season he was awarded the IHL Governor's Trophy for most outstanding defenseman.  He retired as a player  from professional hockey in 1997 and the '97-'98 season saw his coaching debut with the Central-Texas Stampede of the Western Professional Hockey League.  His coaching record that year was 40-23.

The EMU Captain's and General Manager Robert Stumpmier had been working many hours interviewing perspective coaches.  Stumpmier commended the Captain's for their patience and professionalism in the search process.  Norwood had heard of the position through a network of sources via the Detroit Red Wing Alumni Association.  "Everyone at Eagles hockey is extremely pleased that an agreement was reached to bring Norwood in as our coach", GM Stumpmier said.  Norwood was equally pleased saying he was "excited" and looking forward to building a winning organization.

Norwood's first official contact with the players will be at the try outs the end of this month.

Weekend Camp Big Success

July 30, 2006

Huge success!  That is the best way to describe the first ever EMU hockey summer camp.  Approximately 30 players and prospects gathered this past weekend for the two day event.

Saturday's camp was conducted by one of the candidates for the head coaching position.  He led the players through several drills, some of which are used by NHL coach Mike Babcock.  The camp closed with four and five player scrimmage games.  One player commented it was one of the best skates he's had since he came to Eastern.

Sunday's skate had a different feel to it.  The coaching staff remained off the ice and observed the camp from a different viewpoint.  The camp included shootout style practices, passing drills and scrimmages.  The camp was followed by a team cookout at Captain Koester's home.

Overall, the first summer camp was an overwhelming success enjoyed by all.  The next team event will be the tryouts for the new season.  Those will take place on August 26 & 27 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.  More information will follow for that event, in a few days.

CSCHL tourney results

Friday night it was EMU 6, Kent State 3. Box score here. Saturday afternoon, the Eagles ran out of horses and couldn't solve the Illini's DeGeorge, dropping the game 6 - 2. The game was tight until late in the second, when EMU gave up two quick goals to go down 4 - 1. Box score here. The Eagles faced Robert Morris College Sunday morning for the third place position, and the game quickly turned from a "kiss your sister" consolation game to one for the pride. EMU came back from an early three goal deficit to take the game 8 - 6. CSCHL playoff info here.

Report from February 11 & 12, 2005 v University of Michigan - Dearborn

Friday night, #7 EMU took on on their cross-town rival, #6 ranked UM-Dearborn on their ice. The Eagles started poorly defensively, handing the Wolves a 4-0 lead, but battled back to close the gap to 4-3. High pressure was maintained to the end, but alas the Eagles were unable to get the goal they needed.

Saturday night was deja vu, in reverse! The Eagles jumped out to a 4 - 0 lead after one, and held a 5 - 3 lead after two. The Wolves closed the gap, and EMU led by only one goal, 6 - 5, with 13 minutes remaining. The Eagles held UMD at bay, then added two more goals in the final three minutes to close it out 8 - 5. EMU showed goal-scoring across the board - Charlie Jones led the Eagles with two goals, and Dave Stewart, Carl Voelker, Matt Opyd, Steve Kardel, Aaron Diez and Jeremy Majszak chipped in one each.

In this year's battles of EMU v UMD, a great rivalry, the Eagles took three of four, 6 - 3, 10 - 2, 3 - 4, and 8 - 5, a total of  27 - 14.

Report from February 4 & 5, 2005 v Iowa State

The Eagles faced league rival Iowa State on Friday night and took a 4 - 0 victory. Aaron Diez opened the scoring just 55 seconds in with a shot from the point. Jeff Jepson added the next three. Jake Pruss turned away all 32 Cyclone shots.

Saturday afternoon, it was a huge back-and-forth battle between the Cyclones and Eagles, with the Eagles taking the victory with just 32 seconds remaining. Kelly Koester led the Eagles with four goals, including the game winner, and Dan Olgren added the other two.

Report from January 22 & 23, 2005 v Ohio U

What a weekend of great hockey! Friday night, it was Eastern Michigan 1, Ohio U zip. Jake Pruss had another stellar night in net, turning away all 45 Bobcat shots. Dan Olgren scored the lone goal for the Eagles on a first period power play, from Kelly Koester and Carl Voelker. Saturday night, EMU and OU were scoreless after two periods. OU finally solved Jake with a score 2-1/2 minutes into the third, and added another to make it 2-0. Justin Shaw, from Charlie Jones, closed the gap to 2-1 and put new fire into the tiring Eagles. OU got a power play goal to pad their lead to 3-1, but Charlie Jones (Jepson, Majszak) made it close again at 3-2. The Eagles have split the season 2-2 with last year's national champion Bobcats, and hope to face them again at the CSCHL playoffs next month.

Report from January 15 & 16, 2005 v St. Louis

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead v St. Louis, only to have the Billikens tighten the game to 3-2 in the second. But the steady play and pressure of EMU gave the Eagles a 6-3 victory, going 4 for 7 on the power play. Tom Gresham was in net for Eastern. The game ended with a rarity - the game was curfewed by the rink for a senior game that followed, and the Zamboni took over the ice with just over 3 minutes to play. Lots of spirited play at the Zamboni doors, that's for sure!

Saturday, the Eagles and Billikens battled hard, with the Eagles holding a slim 1-0 lead after one period. They broke it open in the second, taking it to 6-0 before St Louis scored a couple in the third period. The final was 8-2, with the Eagles led by Carl Voelker's hat trick. (They were able to finish the game without benefit of curfew clock.)

Report from January 7 & 8, 2005 v Illinois

Jake Pruss earned all three stars Friday night with a stellar performance against #3 ranked Illinois. The Fighting Illini peppered Jake with 69 shots, and he stopped all but two (one on a power play). The Eagles scored three times in the second to stun the opposition (Charlie Jones, Mike Opyd, Jeremy Majszak) and take a 3-1 lead into the third. Illinois scored with just under seven minutes to play to tighten the game at 3-2, but Kelly Koester answered a minute later with a far post slap shot, then closed it out with an empty netter for a 5-2 victory.

Saturday afternoon, Illinois turned the tables as Illini goalie Marcos Montoya turned hot, allowing only one goal on 37 shots. EMU struggled early on the Olympic-sized ice, yielding four goals in the first, but then shut down the opposition until six seconds remained in the game. Final score 5-1.

Report from November 12 & 13, 2004 v Ohio U

Last weekend, the Eagles split with last year's national champion Ohio University, then ranked #2, . Friday night, the Eagles struggled in the first period, falling behind 4-0. They came back strong in the second and third, but lost 6-1. Saturday, they started strongly and never let up. EMU scored first, only to be tied at 1-1 at the end of one. They took the lead again in the second, only to have OU tie it up at 2-2 after two. OU scored first in the third, but the Eagles tied it with 2:30 remaining. It was 3-3 going into the five-minute overtime, and it was the same coming out, setting up the shootout. Neither team scored in their first two attempts, but Jepson, Jones and Mike Opyd found the net for three goals, beating OU's two. Jake Pruss took the win in net for EMU.

Report from the ACHA Showcase, October 15, 16 & 17

The Eagles were at the ACHA Division 1 Showcase in West Chester, Pennsylvania last weekend, taking on Navy, Lehigh and Drexel. In Game 1 Friday night, it was EMU 4, Navy 3. Scoreless after one, EMU took a 2-0 lead in the second, only to have Navy tie it up in the same period. EMU took a 4-2 lead in the third, and Navy got one back, but could not get the tie despite having an empty net the last 90 seconds. On Saturday afternoon, EMU overcame the strong defensive effort and goaltending by Lehigh for a narrow 2-1 victory. Sunday afternoon was a thriller, with EMU taking a 3-0 lead before Drexel roared back in the third to tie the game. With numerous chances both ways in OT to win the game, both goaltenders came up superb and the game finished with a 3-3 tie. ACHA Showcase scores are available at http://www.iceline.info/acha1.htm

Report from Lindenwood University, October 8 & 9

EMU took on #5 Lindenwood on the road Friday night, playing very well when even, with essentially equal shots on goal with LU for the game, but EMU could not stand up against seven power play opportunities. EMU led 2-1 late in the first when LU was handed a 5-3 power play, scored on both, and took a 3-2 lead. Five of LU's six goals came on power plays. Jake Pruss was in net, and handled LU easily when even, helped by a strong defense. Scoring for EMU were Jeremy Majszak, Mike Opyd, and Nate Putek.

On Saturday, Lindenwood took a 2-0 lead after one period, but EMU scored two quick goals in the second to knot it at 2-2. But, EMU failed to learn its lesson from the previous night, and took nine penalties in the next 13 minutes to give LU's power play another four goals, taking only one back on LU's single penalty, and EMU was down 6-3. EMU made it interesting again scoring late in the third, maintaining high pressure until LU scored an empty netter with two seconds left for a 7-4 final. EMU outshot LU 44-36, but the eleven power play opportunities for LU, of which they converted four, made the difference. Tom Gresham was in net for EMU. Opyd, Jepson, Voelker and Koester scored for Eastern.

Report from Robert Morris College, October 1 & 2

EMU took the season opener with 6-4 road win over a tough Robert Morris College. The Eagles led 3-0 after one, and 5-0 after two, and held fast until 6-1/2 minutes to go, when RMC dumped in four goals in just 90 seconds, making it 5-4. Eastern added an important insurance goal with just over one minute remaining. Tom Gresham was in net, turning aside 48 of 52 shots, with spectacular saves throughout the game. Justin Shaw scored EMU's first goal of the season, followed by Dave Stewart and  Bobby Mayes. Shaw scored again midway through the second, followed by Derek Wilson. Charlie Jones added the safety net.

Saturday night brought revenge for RMC as they slipped by the EMU Eagles 6-5. Scoring for EMU were Olgren, Voelker, Koester, Stewart and Jepson. Gresham faced 39 shots, with three of RMC's six goals coming on the power play.

From 2003 - 2004 Season

The #11 ranked Eagles were in tournament action Thanksgiving weekend as they took on three teams from the East Coast Hockey League in the East-West Classic at the University of Dearborn. Opponents were  Rhode Island, ranked #3 nationally, on Friday, #14 West Chester on Saturday, and Rutgers on Sunday. Game reports:

EMU v Rutgers: EMU pounded Rutgers with 72 shots on goal, allowing only 17, as they dominated Rutgers in a 6-0 victory. Scoring for the Eagles were Young (2), Shaw, Jones, Barron, and Drdek. Eric Williams notched the shutout.

EMU v WCU: West Chester scored first blood with a goal in the first minute of play. EMU's Drdek tied the score soon therafter, and Olgren gave the Eagles a 2-1 lead. WC fought back, tying the score at 2-2, but Barron scored what looked to be the game winner for EMU in the third. With about 1-1/2 minutes remaining, West Chester pulled their goalie, and EMU then took a penalty, giving  WC a 6-4 skater advantage. They capitalized, tying the score at 3-3 with 56 seconds remaining. It looked like overtime, but WC slipped one by with 13 seconds remaining to give them a 4-3 win over the Eagles.

EMU v URI: The Eagles jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first ten minutes and took that lead into the locker room after one. The URI Rams surged back with a vengeance, however, and tied the score at 3-3 in the second, only to have EMU take a 4-3 lead into the locker room. The third period went poorly for the Eagles as the Rams scored three more, plus an empty netter, to take a 7-4 victory. Scoring for the Eagles were Thompson, Mayes, Majszak, and Jones.

The EMU Eagles made it seven in a row, taking both games from the Kent State Golden Flashes this past weekend in CSCHL action. On Friday night, Tom Gresham notched a shutout, Jeremy Majszak put in the first two and Charlie Jones put in the last two for a 4-0 victory. On Saturday, Gresham came close to a repeat, but KSU was able to score their lone goal on a breakaway midway through the third. Eagles scoring were Mayes, Gauthier, Putek and Thompson, a 4-1 victory.

Eastern Michigan took on Syracuse University from the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League the previous weekend. The Eagles broke away from the opposition in the second period on Friday night, taking a 5-1 win, with Eric Williams in net. Saturday afternoon, the Eagles found the net 12 times for a 12-3 victory, with Jake Pruss between the pipes for EMU.

Eastern beat the St Louis Billikens 5-1 on Friday night, October 31, led by Kelly Koester with two goals. Tom Gresham and strong defense kept the opposition scoreless until the third. In the rematch on Saturday afternoon, the Eagles notched their third win in a row by beating the Billikens 5-4. EMU jumped to a 3-0 lead, but St Louis came back and tied the game at 4-4 late in the third period. Ryan Thompson completed his hat trick to win it for the Eagles.

The Eagles broke the ice the previous weekend by splitting with #2 ranked Illinois. After disappointing losses to #4 ranked Iowa State and #5 ranked Michigan-Dearborn, including an overtime thriller to UM-D, the Eagles took on the University of Illinois at their "Big Pond". Friday night's game was a battle, with the EMU squad learning the style needed to play the hot Illini squad on their unusual ice, but the Eagles came up short 4-2. Saturday night, the Eagles put their new knowledge and their skills to work, and although down 4-2 at one point, they climbed back in to tie the score and take it into overtime. Kelly Koester notched the game winner, his second goal of the game, handing Illinois their first loss of the season. Tom Gresham covered the net in both games, keeping the high-powered Illinois offense at bay.

News from the Fassbender family - It's a boy!!!!! (pictures here and here) The new Fassbender is ---- Michael Paul, born Saturday, September 20, 2003. 8lbs, 10oz and 21" long.

The Eagles opened the exhibition season with a convincing 8-4 win over Michigan State, and then followed with a 6-4 win over Central Michigan.

October 3 - EMU dropped the first of two at #8 ranked Iowa State. They outshot the Cyclones 32-20, but suffered a shutout at the hands of ISU goalie Ross Patrick. The game was scoreless after two periods, with the Eagles outshooting the Cyclones 25-10. In the third, ISU's Tamer scored on the power play, and ISU followed it up late in the third with a goal by Popadych. Jake Pruss was stellar in EMU's net, facing 20 shots.

October 4 - The Eagles quickly solved the problem of Ross Patrick, scoring in the first minute of play. Although the play went back and forth, ISU led 2-1 after the first. ISU expanded their lead in the second to 4-1, scoring on a 5 on 3 power play, then again on the following 5 on 4  power play. EMU closed the gap to 4-2, but the Cyclones finished up with a 6-2 victory over the Eagles.
